Solar Panel Project at Cheik Shakib Arslan Secondary School, Beirut
Overview
The Rotary Club of Beirut Cedars, with support from the Rotary Club of Los Angeles Cedars, will install solar panels at Cheik Shakib Arslan Secondary School in Beirut. This project aims to provide reliable electricity, reducing costs and environmental impact for the school.
Project Background
Lebanon’s electricity crisis has created significant challenges for public institutions like Cheik Shakib Arslan Secondary School. The school, which educates 300 students and 70 teachers, relies heavily on costly and polluting backup generators. Recognizing the need for a better solution, the Rotary Club of Beirut Cedars assessed the community and identified this school as a beneficiary.
Community Assessment and Project Development
The assessment took place from April to May 2024, involving discussions with key stakeholders like the school principal and UNGC Lebanon representatives. The community highlighted the need for stable power to support education, particularly for digital classrooms.
The project includes installing a solar system with 15 to 20 KW capacity. This will cut the school’s dependence on generators and reduce its carbon footprint. The school will maintain the system, as agreed in a signed MOU.
Environmental Impact
Air pollution from generators is the main environmental threat the school faces. The solar project will reduce this pollution and decrease carbon emissions.
Future Outlook
This project addresses immediate power needs while supporting sustainability and environmental stewardship. The Rotary Club of Beirut Cedars and its partners are committed to ensuring the project’s long-term success, with the school managing it after installation.
